Selected Reviews

2007 24-Hour Museum and Timeout:
"Man or Iron: sculpture exhibition at The Brunel Museum, Rotherhithe (June to September 2007 on a regular weekly basis)."From the industrial debris of east London, Russian born Philip Firsov creates a savage hymn to engineering and art. Men are machines, women are musical monsters and butcher's slabs turn into people. These sad and vicious pieces owe as much to Dalston market as they do to Gogol and Baba Yaga… His work draws on the folklore and musical heritage of Eastern Europe."

2nd June 2007 Financial Times, Life and Arts Critics Choice
"Philip Firsov: Reconstruction, Brunel Museum SE16 "Men of iron, Women of Wood" is the subtitle for this young figurative sculptor's first solo show. Heads and full-length figures, some holding musical instruments (Firsov comes from a musical family) have power and pathos, rigour and irregularity; playing on references from junk art to constructivism, they hold their own in this museum dedicated to the 19th century master of iron and steel." By Jackie Wullschlager.

2006 August 5th, Financial Times Culture Section Review of show at The Dartington Hall, written by Jackie Wullschlager, Chief Editor.
"Philip Firsov: Shostakovich**** One week only. This first show from a markedly original 21-year Old Russian artist is part of Dartington's Shostakovich festivities. In an impressive cycle of 10 large paintings, from the figurative to abstract, each represents a letter of Shostakovich's name, which he himself used cryptographically; all show sculptural influences, especially in the powerful mask-like face, a confident handling of lush impastoed paint, a fine setting of figures in space, and a marvellous feel of colour. Expressionist woodcarvings, referencing ancient Slavic art, are also compelling. Dartington Hall Totnes, Devon."
